Rain, rain, go away.
Why must you continue to stay??
It has been raining in the Upstate for the past two weeks straight with only tiny hints of sporadic sunshine along the way. Until today.
The constant threat of an unannounced downpour has kept me off my bike more than I'd like to admit. That, coupled with moving into a new house has kept me from training as much and as well as I should have been for "the ride." Most days I would collapse on my couch after a whole morning of packing, loading, unloading, and unpacking boxes and want nothing to do with my bicycle. Not to mention it was probably raining anyway.
On one such occasion, I flopped down on the sofa after hours of moving and turned the TV on. I happily let the screen suck me into its mindless chatter and turned my own mind off temporarily. That is until a certain commercial came on and awoke me from my stupor. I don't know if you've seen it, but it's a clever new split-screen commercial created by the Alzheimer's Association. On one side of the screen is an example of an older lady suffering from Alzheimer's with a voice-over describing the symptoms and difficulties she and her family face through the progression of the disease. Sadly, with no truly effective medicine and no cure, she dies in the end.
On the other side of the screen is the same woman with the same prognosis. It also has a voice-over explaining the help and direction she received along the way, ultimately receiving a cure for the disease, preventing death. A happy ending!
I may have made it sound longer than it is. It's actually quite short, to-the-point, and powerful - powerful enough to get me off my duff, out the door, and on my bike. It made me realize, once again, how blessed I am to have full control of all my faculties and to have a healthy family surrounding me. It also helped me to remember why I am doing "the ride" for the fourth year in a row. There are people out there suffering from an incurable disease that steals their memories, their identities, and even their personalities from them. I have absolutely no excuse for lounging around on my couch when I could be pumping my legs on Big Blue trying to make a difference, trying to find a cure.
